Melilla is a Spanish municipality located on the North African coast. Situated east of the Cape of Three Crosses, it borders Morocco and faces the Mediterranean Sea. In 2025, Melilla had a population of 87,067. Within its 12 square kilometer area, Melilla is home to a concentration of synagogues, mosques, and Christian churches, offering visitors a unique cultural experience.
Melilla la Vieja is a large fortress located just north of the port of Melilla, one of Spain's Plaza de soberanĂa (ruling fortresses) on the North African coast. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, much of the fortress has been restored in recent years. The fortress contains many of Melilla's most important historical monuments.
