| Santa Fe National Forest is a protected national forest in northern New Mexico, in the Southwestern United States. Established in 1915, the forest covers an area of 1,558,452 acres (6,306.83 km²). Elevations range from 1,600 feet (5,300 m) to 4,000 feet (13,103 feet) at Truchas Peak, located within the Pecos Wilderness Area. | |
| Here, you can find the headwaters of the Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Explore the Pecos, San Pedro, Chama, and Dome wilderness areas on hikes, horseback riding, or on any of the 1,000 miles of walking trails. Try whitewater rafting on the Rio Chama or Rio Grande. Consider hunting turkeys, elk, deer, and bears, or visit one of the many nearby Indigenous settlements or Spanish mission churches. Brilliant golden aspen trees adorn the highlands from September to October, and snow blankets the Santa Fe ski area in winter. | |
