| Sera Monastery is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, located 1.25mi north of Lhasa and about north of the Jokhang. The other two are Ganden Monastery and Drepung Monastery. The origin of its name is attributed to a fact that the site where the monastery was built was surrounded by wild roses in bloom.The original Sera Monastery is responsible for some 19 hermitages, including four nunneries, which are all located in the foot hills north of Lhasa. The Sera Monastery complex is built on a hillside and consists of several chapels, prayer halls, and residential quarters for the monks. One of the most notable features of the monastery is its debating courtyard, where monks engage in lively and spirited debates on Buddhist philosophy and scripture. The main prayer hall of Sera Monastery, called the Coqen Hall, is a beautiful building adorned with intricate artwork and statues of Buddhist deities. The monastery also houses a number of important relics and artifacts, including the mummified body of one of its former abbots. Sera Monastery has a rich history and has played an important role in Tibetan Buddhism, particularly in the development of the Gelug school. It was once home to over 5,000 monks, but today has a smaller community of resident monks and nuns. Despite facing various challenges and disruptions over the years, Sera Monastery remains an active and important center for Buddhist study and practice in Tibet. | |
