| Drepung Monastery is one of the "great three" Gelug university gompas (monasteries) of Tibet. Drepung is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and is located on the Gambo Utse mountain. The other two are Ganden Monastery and Sera Monastery. Drepung Monastery used to be one of the largest monasteries in the world, with over 10,000 monks at its peak. It played an important role in the spiritual and political life of Tibet and was the residence of the Dalai Lamas until the 5th Dalai Lama moved to the Potala Palace in the 17th century. The monastery has also been a center for the study of Buddhist philosophy, metaphysics, and ethics. The monastery consists of several colleges and chapels, including the Ganden Phodrang, which was the residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959. Other important buildings within the monastery include the Coqen Hall, the Kelsang Temple, the Ngakpa Tratsang College, and the Loseling College. Drepung Monastery suffered significant damage during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, and many of its treasures were destroyed or looted. However, the Chinese government has since made efforts to restore the monastery, and it remains an important site for Tibetan Buddhism and a popular tourist destination. | |
