Tibet is an autonomous region located in the southwestern part of China covering much of the Tibetan Plateau spanning about 2,500,000 km2 (970,000 sq mi). The population of the region is 3,180,000 per estimates taken in 2014. Lhasa or Chengguan is a district and administrative capital of Lhasa City in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
Tibet is known for its high altitude landscapes, including the Himalayas, the Plateau of Tibet, and the Tibetan Plateau, which is the highest plateau in the world.

Tibet has a rich cultural and spiritual heritage, with Tibetan Buddhism being the predominant religion. The Dalai Lama, who is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally resided in Tibet until he fled to India in 1959 following the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The Chinese government has since maintained control over Tibet, and there have been ongoing tensions between the Chinese government and Tibetans who seek greater autonomy and cultural preservation.

Tibet has a unique culture and language, with a long history of trade and interaction with neighboring regions such as India, Nepal, and China. Tibetan culture is characterized by its traditional art, music, and dance, as well as its unique cuisine, which includes dishes such as momos (steamed dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and butter tea.

Tibet is also home to several important sites of Buddhist pilgrimage, including the Potala Palace in Lhasa, which was the former residence of the Dalai Lama and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important sites include Jokhang Temple, the Barkhor market, and the monasteries of Sera, Drepung, and Ganden.

Despite ongoing tensions and restrictions on certain aspects of Tibetan culture, tourism has become an important industry in Tibet, with visitors coming to experience the unique landscapes, culture, and spiritual traditions of this remote and fascinating region.
