| Mitchell Caverns, located near Essex, California, are a trio of solutional limestone caves situated at about 4,300 feet elevation on the east side of the Providence Mountains within the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. | The caves, named after Jack and Ida Mitchell who managed them as a desert resort and Route 66 attraction from 1934 to 1954, feature spectacular formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, rimstone dams, draperies, and cave coral. The two main connected caves open to the public are "El Pakiva" (The Devil's House) and "Tecopa," named after a Shoshonean chieftain. Mitchell Caverns also hold archaeological and paleontological significance, including Chemehuevi Indian artifacts and prehistoric animal remains. | |
