Kazakhstan is a country in Central Asia with a land area of 2,724,900 square kilometres (1,052,100 sq mi) and a population of 18.8 million in 2018. The capital is Nur-Sultan, formerly known as Astana. It was moved from Almaty, the country's largest city, in 1997.

The Ascension Cathedral, also known as the Zenkov Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was built between 1904 and 1907 by the architect Andrei Zenkov, and is one of the few buildings in Almaty that survived the 1911 earthquake.
