It is a part of the South Caucasus region, and is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia and Turkey to the west, and Iran to the south. Baku is the capital and largest city.
The Quadrangular Mardakan Fortress is an ancient fortress located in Mardakan, a suburb of Baku, Azerbaijan. It is one of the many fortifications that were built in the Absheron Peninsula during the medieval period to defend against invasions.
Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve is located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of the center of Baku. It represents flora and fauna, hunting, lifestyles, and culture of pre-historic and medieval periods of time. The reserve has an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings.
