Old Station is a census-designated place in Shasta County, California. It is located 13 miles (21 km) north of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Old Station sits at an elevation of 4,386 feet (1,337 m). Its population is 64 as of the 2020 census, up from 51 from the 2010 census. Old Station has a rich history and the incredible beauty of nature.
Hat Creek Campground is situated in a mixed coniferous forest, adjacent to Hat Creek. Stream fishing in Hat Creek contains trophy trout. The scenic Spatter Cones Trail is across the street. The fun and adventurous Subway Cave is only a mile to the north.
Subway Cave is a lava tube that was formed during volcanic events just twenty thousand years ago. It was created when lava flowed beneath a solidified crust, forming a tunnel that eventually emptied as the lava drained. The cave is about 1/3 of a mile (0.6 kilometers) long and features a large, arched ceiling.. The trailhead is located less than half a mile from the junction of Highway 89 and Highway 44 in Old Station.
