Shasta County is a county located in the northern part of California. It is part of the Sacramento Valley region and is bordered by the Cascade Range to the north and the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east. The county seat of Shasta County is Redding, which is the largest city in the county and serves as its primary economic and cultural center. Its population was 182,155 in 2020.

Subway Cave is a lava tube that was formed during volcanic events just twenty thousand years ago. It was created when lava flowed beneath a solidified crust, forming a tunnel that eventually emptied as the lava drained. The cave is about 1/3 of a mile (0.6 kilometers) long and features a large, arched ceiling.. The trailhead is located less than half a mile from the junction of Highway 89 and Highway 44 in Old Station.

Hat Creek Campground is situated in a mixed coniferous forest, adjacent to Hat Creek. Stream fishing in Hat Creek contains trophy trout. The scenic Spatter Cones Trail is across the street. The fun and adventurous Subway Cave is only a mile to the north.
