Humboldt County is on the north coast of California, about 200 miles (four hours) north of San Francisco and 50 miles from the Oregon border. As of the 2020 census, the population was 136,463. The county seat is the City of Eureka on Humboldt Bay, around which most of the county’s small population resides.

The King Range National Conservation Area encompasses 68,000 acres along 35-miles of California's dramatic north coast, where the landscape was too rugged for highway building, forcing State Highway 1 inland. Accessible by only a few back roads, this remote region of mountains and seascapes is also known as California's Lost Coast.

Sinkyone Wilderness State Park lies on the southern portion of the Lost Coast, a 60-mile stretch of wilderness comprising the park and the King Range National Conservation Area.

Camp at one of the last few significantly developed and remote coastlines in California. This piece of wilderness will make you feel like you are in another world. The campsite itself is very primitive. There are fire rings and small outhouses dotting the area. There is no potable water, but water can be taken from the creek and boiled or filtered.

For more than 100 years, Shady Dell was a private, hidden treasure, but in 2011 Save the Redwoods League purchased the 957-acre property and began planning its protection and restoration. In 2016, with the help of a number of partners, the Peter Douglas Coastal Trail was opened, giving the public an opportunity to experience this special place firsthand.

Redwoods Monastery is a small community of Roman Catholic women monastics founded in 1962 from the Cistercian Monastery of Nazareth in Belgium. Nestled among the majestic redwoods and Douglas fir of the Lost Coast of Northern California, bordered on one side by the salmon bearing Mattole River.

This is a large, mostly west-facing, black sand beach with offshore reefs just north of the town of Shelter Cove. Black Sands Beach is a picturesque and relaxing. The black sand that covers the beach and has given the spot its name is very unusual. The beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of coastline 45 miles south of Eureka in Northern California.
