Mission Dolores is the oldest neighborhood in San Francisco and therefore its birthplace. It is named after the Spanish Mission Dolores settlement of 1776, and is a sub-area of the much larger Mission District. Its population was 10,744 in 2016. Mission San Francisco de Asis, or Mission Dolores, is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco and the seventh religious settlement established as part of the California chain of missions. Mission Dolores, the oldest intact building in San Francisco, was constructed from 1782-1791 with Native American labor. It has been used continuously for religious purposes since that time.
