Tamil Nadu is the southernmost state of India. It is home to the Tamil people, who speak Tamil – the state's official language and the first language to be recognized as a classical language in India. Its capital and largest city is Chennai. The state's population was 72,147,030 in 2011.
The desolate town of Mamallapuram was once the residence of the Pallava king, who, fueled by his passion for architecture, commissioned the construction of a group of temples in the 7th and 8th centuries.

The ancient ruins of Mamallapuram include granite temples carved into chariots, cave shrines, lion pillars, and massive outdoor reliefs. Most famous among them is the "Descent of the Ganges," depicting the descent of the sacred river from heaven to earth. Overlooking the Bay of Bengal, the exquisitely carved Shore Temple is an ideal spot for watching the sunset.
