| Tavurvur is a stratovolcano located near the town of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the country, having erupted numerous times over the past century, with the most recent eruptions occurring in 2014 and 2015. Despite its frequent activity, Tavurvur is also a popular tourist destination, with visitors able to climb to the summit for views of the crater and surrounding landscape. | |
| This volcano is part of a larger volcanic complex known as the Rabaul Crater, which includes several other volcanoes and volcanic features. The crater was formed during a violent eruption in 536 AD, considered one of the largest volcanic events in the last 10,000 years. The eruptions of Tavurvur are characterized by explosive activity, and can produce ash plumes reaching heights of several kilometers. In addition to ash, the eruptions can also produce lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and lahars (mudslides of volcanic ash mixed with water). | |
