Shasta Dam is a concrete gravity arch dam located on the Sacramento River in northern California, USA. It is the second tallest dam in the United States, standing at 602 feet (183 meters) high. The dam was completed in 1945 and is operated by the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
The primary purpose of Shasta Dam is to provide water for irrigation, municipal and industrial use, and hydroelectric power generation. It also plays a critical role in flood control, helping to prevent flooding downstream during periods of heavy rain or snowmelt.

The dam impounds the Sacramento River, creating Shasta Lake, which is the largest reservoir in California by volume and a popular destination for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities.

Shasta Dam is also an important cultural and historical landmark, as it was built during World War II as part of a national effort to increase water and power resources for the war effort. The construction of the dam required the relocation of several communities, including the town of Keswick, which now lies submerged beneath Shasta Lake.

Today, visitors can tour the dam and learn about its history and operation at the Shasta Dam Visitor Center. The center offers exhibits, audiovisual presentations, and guided tours of the dam and powerhouse.
