| Sbeitla is a small town in central-western Tunisia, 250km from Tunis. It is famous for its unique Roman ruins and the Capitol, which includes not one but three temples dedicated to Minerva, Jupiter, and Juno, the patron goddesses of Rome. | |
| The western regions were once incredibly prosperous in ancient times, and possess countless treasures for amateur archaeologists. The Makthar archaeological site, one of the largest in Tunisia, is home to some spectacular ruins, such as the Trajan Triumphal Arch, the Great Baths, and the elegant colonnades of the Juvenum School. In Haidra, you can see the ruins of one of the largest Byzantine fortresses in North Africa, as well as several Christian churches. Indeed, the western regions boast many remnants of ancient Christianity. In Sbeitla, the massive Basilica of Vitalis boasts a stunning baptismal font adorned with mosaics. In the countryside, the domes of El Gousset are all that remain of a grand church, 33 meters long, reminding us that Tunisia was once an important Christian stronghold in the West. | |
