Mount Popa and the Popa Taungkalat monastery are located only 50 km from Bagan and therefore much visited together by travelers. Mount Popa is a stratovulcano, 1518 metres above sea level, topping beautiful monastery Popa Taungkalat on a smaller pedestal hill with 737 metres. Mount Popa is home of the Nats spirits and also nicknamed as Burma’s Mount Olympus. The mount lies in a designated nature reserve and national park. Popa Taungkalat is a smaller vulcano next to Mount Popa. On top there is a stunning must-see Buddhist monastery, accessible by taking 777 steps. Besides many travelers, many Burmese visit Mount Popa every year during the festival season on the full moon of Nayon (May or June) and the full moon of Nadaw (November or December). Mass hiking the peak happens in December and April during Thingyan festival. |
