The mountain was named by the Duke of the Abruzzi in honor of Samuel Baker, a 19th-century British explorer who was the first European to visit Lake Albert, located northeast of the Rwenzori Mountains. - Mount Baker is part of the Rwenzori Mountains, often referred to as the "Mountains of the Moon." This range is renowned for its unique alpine flora and fauna, as well as its glaciers and snowfields, despite being located near the equator.
