Surprise is a city located in the northwestern part of Maricopa County, in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. Surprise covers an area of approximately 108 square miles (280 square kilometers). The city is known for its desert landscape, with vast open spaces and views of the White Tank Mountains to the west.
