Manzanar is a historic site located in the Owens Valley of California, United States. It was the site of one of ten internment camps where Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated and detained during World War II.
In 1942, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forced relocation and internment of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast of the United States. Over 120,000 Japanese Americans, two-thirds of whom were American citizens, were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to internment camps in remote areas of the country.

Manzanar was one of these internment camps, and at its peak, it held over 10,000 Japanese Americans. The camp was in operation from 1942 to 1945, and during that time, internees lived in cramped barracks and were subject to strict regulations and surveillance.

Today, the Manzanar National Historic Site preserves and interprets the history of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Visitors can explore the site via several hiking trails and tour the remains of the barracks, mess halls, and other buildings that once housed internees.

The site also includes a visitor center with exhibits and educational programs that provide a detailed history of the internment camps and their impact on Japanese American families and communities. The visitor center is open year-round, and admission is free.

Visiting Manzanar can be a powerful and emotional experience, and it provides an opportunity to learn about a dark chapter in American history and to reflect on the importance of civil liberties and human rights.
