| King Hiep Hoa became emperor in 1841 after his predecessor, Emperor Thieu Tri, died without an heir. His reign was marked by a number of significant events and changes in Vietnam. One of the most notable events during his reign was the French colonization of Vietnam, which began in the 1850s and had aprofound impact on the country. King Hiep Hoa was known for his interest in literature, poetry, and music. He also oversaw the construction of several important cultural and architectural projects, including the restoration of the Imperial City in Hue and the construction of several pagodas and temples throughout the country. Despite his contributions to Vietnamese culture and society, King Hiep Hoa's reign was marked by political instability and social unrest. He faced several rebellions and uprisings during his reign, and his attempts to reform the government and modernize the country were met with resistance from conservative elements within the imperial court. King Hiep Hoa abdicated in 1847 in favor of his son, Emperor Tu Duc, and he died in 1864 at the age of 56.
