| The region of Jammu and Kashmir is the largest part of the disputed territory and is administered by India. It consists of three main regions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh. The capital city of Jammu and Kashmir is Srinagar. The dispute over Kashmir dates back to the partition of India in 1947, when British India was divided into two separate nations: India and Pakistan. Kashmir was a princely state at the time, and its ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh, chose to remain independent. However, due to pressure from both India and Pakistan, he eventually signed the Instrument of Accession, acceding to India in 1947. Since then, India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars and engaged in several conflicts over the control of Kashmir. The Line of Control (LoC) separates the Indian-administered part of Kashmir from the Pakistani-administered part. Both India and Pakistan claim the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir as their own. In August 2019, the Indian government revoked the special autonomous status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. This move led to the bifurcation of the state into two separate union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Ladakh is now a separate union territory directly administered by the central government of India. Kashmir remains a sensitive and contentious issue, with ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. The situation in the region has had political, social, and economic implications for the people living there. Efforts to resolve the Kashmir dispute through dialogue and diplomatic means continue, but a lasting resolution has yet to be achieved. | |
