The fortress consists of two main gates: the front gate, inscribed with the words "Hải Vân Quan," and the rear gate, bearing the inscription "Thiên hạ đệ nhất hùng quan". The site was part of a larger defensive system, including walls, barracks, and an armory. Over the centuries, Hải Vân Quan has witnessed numerous historical events and was a crucial military post during various conflicts. After a period of deterioration, the site underwent a major restoration and was reopened to the public in 2021.
