Hải Vân Quan is a historic military fortress located at the summit of Hải Vân Pass, on the border between Huế City and Đà Nẵng City. Built in 1826 under the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng of the Nguyễn Dynasty, it served as a strategic defensive structure to protect the imperial capital of Huế and control movement between the northern and central regions of Vietnam.
The gate is situated at an elevation of 496 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of both the South China Sea and the surrounding mountains.

The fortress consists of two main gates: the front gate, inscribed with the words "Hải Vân Quan," and the rear gate, bearing the inscription "Thiên hạ đệ nhất hùng quan". The site was part of a larger defensive system, including walls, barracks, and an armory. Over the centuries, Hải Vân Quan has witnessed numerous historical events and was a crucial military post during various conflicts.

After a period of deterioration, the site underwent a major restoration and was reopened to the public in 2021. Today, Hải Vân Quan is recognized as a national historical monument and is a popular stop for travelers journeying between Huế and Đà Nẵng, offering both historical insight and breathtaking scenery.
