Fossil Canyon is a popular hiking destination located in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park near Ocotillo, California. The canyon is named for the many marine fossils that can be found in the area, which date back millions of years.
The trailhead for Fossil Canyon is located off of Split Mountain Road, and the hike is approximately 3 miles round trip. The hike can be challenging due to the rocky terrain and steep inclines, but the views of the surrounding desert landscape are well worth the effort.

As hikers make their way through the canyon, they can see many different types of fossils embedded in the rocks, including shells, coral, and even ancient whale bones. The fossils provide a glimpse into the area's rich geological history, and hikers are encouraged to leave them undisturbed for others to enjoy.

In addition to the fossils, hikers may also spot a variety of desert wildlife, including bighorn sheep, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. Visitors are advised to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate hiking gear, as temperatures in the desert can be extreme.
