Easter Island Chile Last Updated: 06/27/2026 |
| Easter Island is a remote island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, famous for its mysterious stone statues called Moai. The island is Chilean territory and is also known as Rapa Nui by the indigenous Polynesian people. | |
| The island was settled by Polynesians around 800 AD, and the Moai statues were carved between the 13th and 16th centuries. There are over 900 Moai statues on the island, with the largest weighing 86 tons. The Moai are believed to represent ancestors and are placed on pedestals called ahu facing inland. Easter Island is also notorious for its ecological disaster. Deforestation on the island led to soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. This caused the collapse of the island's civilization, as it was no longer able to sustain its population. Today, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and efforts are underway to restore its ecosystem. | |
