| The Caves of the Patriarchs, or Tombs of the Patriarchs, known to Jews by their biblical name Machpelah and to Muslims as the Ibrahim Mosque or Ibrahim Mosque, is a series of caves located in the center of the Old City of Hebron in the West Bank, 30 km south of Jerusalem. | |
| One of the holiest sites on earth is the Machpelah Cave (also known as the “Cave of the Patriarchs”) in the southern Israeli city of Hebron. Here, Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Leah are buried (Patriarch Rachel is buried elsewhere). Machpelah means "double" in Hebrew. One reason given is that four prestigious couples are buried there. Another reason is that it is a two-tiered cave. | |
