Cape Coast Castle is another significant historical site located along the coast of Ghana, near the town of Cape Coast. Similar to Elmina Castle, it played a central role in the transatlantic slave trade and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Originally built by the Swedes in the 17th century and later expanded by the British, Cape Coast Castle served as a major trading post for enslaved Africans. It was strategically located along the coast to facilitate the capture, imprisonment, and transportation of enslaved people to the Americas.

The castle's dungeons were notorious for their cramped and inhumane conditions, where captured Africans were held before being loaded onto ships bound for the New World. Countless individuals perished within the castle's walls, either from disease, starvation, or brutality.

Cape Coast Castle also served as the administrative center for the British colonial government in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) until the capital was moved to Accra in 1877.

Today, Cape Coast Castle stands as a powerful symbol of the atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade. It has been converted into a museum and memorial, offering visitors insights into the history of the slave trade and the experiences of those who suffered within its walls. The castle's Door of No Return is a poignant reminder of the millions of Africans forcibly taken from their homeland and shipped into slavery overseas. Many people visit Cape Coast Castle each year to learn about this dark chapter in history and to honor the memory of those who endured unimaginable suffering.
