Convict Lake, located in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains of California, is renowned for its stunning alpine scenery and exceptional fishing opportunities. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,580 to 7,850 feet, the lake is surrounded by towering peaks, including Mount Morrison, providing a picturesque backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts.
Convict Lake is particularly famous for its world-class trout fishing, primarily featuring rainbow, brown, and brook trout. The fishing season typically begins on the last Saturday of April and runs until November 15. During this period, the lake is stocked weekly with 800 to 1,000 fingerling rainbow trout, along with additional stockings of larger "catchable" trout and Alpers Trout throughout the summer months.

The Convict Lake Trail offers a scenic hiking experience around the lake, taking about 1.5 hours to complete. This trail features minimal elevation gain and rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Additionally, a trail on the north side leads into the John Muir Wilderness, providing access to several more lakes and hiking opportunities.
