| The Bigorski Monastery, dedicated to St. John the Baptist (St. Jovan Krstitel), is one of the most significant Orthodox monasteries in North Macedonia. | Founded in 1020, the monastery has a rich history, surviving fires, earthquakes, wars, and periods of disrepair, especially during communist rule. It was painstakingly restored and is now renowned for its stunning architecture, including a beautifully carved wooden iconostasis by Petre Filipovski, and its collection of holy relics. The monastery is also famous for its icon of St. John the Baptist, which is believed to have miraculous healing powers and has a fascinating legend surrounding its disappearance and return. The complex includes the main church, an ossuary, a defense tower, monastery lodgings, and guest accommodations. The name "Bigorski" comes from the travertine used in its construction.
