The Big Bear Solar Observatory is a solar observatory located in Big Bear Lake, California. It is operated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is one of the premier solar observatories in the world. Shady Cove Group Campground is a beautiful place to camp within the Children's National Forest. It provides access to numerous trails and a lookout tower, with a climbing area nearby. The Children's Forest was burned in a devastating wildfire and was rebuilt with the help of area children.
Keller Peak Fire Lookout is usually open to the public 9am - 5pm daily from Memorial Day to mid-November. Located east of Running Springs on Forest Road 1N96, this 5-mile road is paved all the way to the fire lookout. There are excellent views of the San Bernardino Mountains including three lakes: Arrowhead, Gregory, and Silverwood.
