The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse was moved to Shelter Cove from Cape Mendocino in 1998. It opened to the public in May of 2000. The nonprofit society raised the money and recruited the volunteers for the move project.

This is a large, mostly west-facing, black sand beach with offshore reefs just north of the town of Shelter Cove. Black Sands Beach is a picturesque and relaxing. The black sand that covers the beach and has given the spot its name is very unusual. The beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of coastline 45 miles south of Eureka in Northern California.
Shelter Cove is a census-designated place in Humboldt County, California. It lies at an elevation of 138 feet (42 m). Shelter Cove is on California's Lost Coast where the King Range meets the Pacific Ocean. The population was 803 at the 2020 census.
