Its county seat is Morgantown. Named Monongalia as it was the land of the Monongahela River, it was home to a few settlers and Native American Tribes of Delaware, Shawnees, and Iroquois. | |

Its southern edge abuts Cheat Lake and the canyon section of Cheat River, a popular whitewater rafting river in the eastern United States. Coopers Rock State Forest is named for Coopers Rock, a series of sandstone cliffs above the Cheat River Gorge. | |
