The Walls of Ston are a series of defensive stone walls that surrounded and protected the city of Ston, southern Croatia. Ston city walls consist of the main wall and three forts, forty-one towers, seven bastions, four pre-walls, and a water-filled moat that stretches around the western, southern and eastern edges of Ston. The construction of these magnificent walls began in early 16th century.

Croatia is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe. The country spans an area of 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles), hosting a population of nearly 3.9 million. Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia.

Together with the city walls, the fortress forms an imposing stronghold. Its construction began in 1278, when Hvar was under Venetian rule. Archaeological finds however suggest that fortified constructions may already have existed in earlier times. In 1551 a new fortress was built on the site of the ancient fortification.
