Nantucket County is an island in Massachusetts, located approximately 30 miles (48 km) south of the Cape Cod Peninsula, and is Massachusetts' southeasternmost town. Along with the smaller islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it forms Nantucket County and City, a combined county and city administrative unit. Its population is projected to be 14,758 in 2025.
The Sankaty Head Lighthouse is located on Nantucket Island. Built in 1850, it was automated in 1965 and remains operational. The 70-foot (approximately 21-meter) brick and granite structure sits atop a cliff at the end of what is now Baxter Road in Siasconset, flashing a white light every 7.5 seconds. It was one of the first lighthouses in the United States to be equipped with a Fresnel lens.
The Nantucket Shipwreck and Salvage Museum in Nantucket, Massachusetts, is a small, seasonal, non-profit museum dedicated to the history of shipwrecks off the coast of Nantucket and in the Nantucket Strait. The museum displays over 5,000 artifacts and memorabilia collected from local shipwrecks over the past 300 years.
