Mount Karthala is an active shield volcano located on the southern part of Grande Comore Island, which is part of the Union of the Comoros in East Africa. With an elevation of 2,361 meters (7,746 feet), it is the highest point in the Comoros and one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
The volcano has erupted several times in recent history, with the most recent eruption occurring in 2021. The eruptions have caused significant damage to the surrounding areas, including displacement of residents and destruction of homes and infrastructure.

Despite its activity, Mount Karthala is also an important tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to hike and explore the volcano's crater and surrounding areas. The climb to the summit can be challenging and requires a guide, but the views of the island and surrounding ocean are said to be breathtaking.
